Doulas are for women and pregnant people who feel it's important to make informed choices about their birth plan, their health, and the health of their child. Doulas are there to support a first time birther, or potentially challenging vaginal birth after caesarian (VBAC). They are for people who are sensitive to medications, have birth trauma from earlier labours, and have strong emotions connected to miscarriage, fertility and childbirth. Doulas are for single parents, marginalized persons, and youth at risk. Doulas are for loss parents. Doulas can support with a variety of intended pregnancy outcomes by assisting you with investigating alternative pregnancy and childbirth options.
Hiring birth support offers a professional support person to guide you through pregnancy and the birthing process. While hiring a doula cannot ever completely guarantee lesser interventions, or achieving the perfect birth experience, you and your family deserve support. You don't need to go this alone.
Doulas and Partners
Partners do amazing work in supporting their loved one during birth. Sometimes, the partner needs nurturing. Partners know how to love you. There are times that a partner may struggle with seeing you uncomfortable and in difficult labour. And while they know you best, a doula knows birth. What a doula can offer is filling the gap of birth knowledge, know what positions are best for the type of labour you're experiencing. A doula can help navigate hospital procedures and interventions when decisions are tough. Sometimes the partner may feel "too close to the fire" to know what questions are important in the moment. A doula does not replace a partner, but tries to empower the partner to be the person who is hands on with you, offering you comfort and support. We are sensitive to the people in the space, and want to help them feel useful and needed, while normalizing the experience for everyone. Partners need breaks. They may choose to update family. Birthing people need support if a partner needs to step out.
